California Democrats Strike Down Gun Control Law–to Protect Hollywood

These days, the word Democrat has become code for “hypocrite.” Again and again, Democrats contradict their own so-called values and convictions, whenever it pleases them (or helps them).

Case in point, gun control. In blue states, good luck trying to get a gun. Many of them restrict conceal carry licenses if you can even purchase a firearm. But it seems there are limits to how much they restrict gun ownership and use.

Because a good gun law was being considered, one that might save lives. But Democrat-run California killed it. Why? Because it would have affected Hollywood.

A bill to institute gun safety measures in the aftermath of the October 21, 2021, Rust shooting has failed to pass the Democrat-dominated California legislature.

This bill would require a motion picture production employer to hire a qualified set safety supervisor for all motion picture productions to perform a risk assessment…

The text makes clear that SB831 “would allow the use of a firearm and blank ammunition containing gunpowder or other explosive charge on motion picture productions only for specified purposes and under specified safety conditions.” [Source: Breitbart]

What the heck? Democrats voted against a gun control law? Are they insane?

Oh, this was a law that would have put more scrutiny and accountability for liberal-run Hollywood! So, of course, Democrats in California’s government killed the bill. Why would they do anything that might inconvenience and interfere with their biggest donors’ industry?

This law was proposed after a horrible mistake on the set of the movie Rust resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. A gun with live ammo was handed to actor Alec Baldwin, who accidentally shot Hutchins and Joel Souza.

The event happened because already-in-place gun safety standards were not followed. Investigations into the event are still going on, leaving many wondering whose at fault.

This law would have required all movie sets to implement risk assessments and other measures to ensure guns are being used in a safe manner. It would have enhanced gun safety on sets, reducing the chances of another tragedy.

So, why the hell didn’t California pass this law?

Democrats have an overwhelming majority in California’s state legislature. There is no reason Republicans could be blamed for this bill not passing. The only conclusion is that Democrats refused to support a gun control bill that could save lives.

The reasons are obvious. Democrats, especially those in California, depend on the financial support of many Hollywood professionals. If they passed a law that would burden their industry, even if it does good, these politicians might lose funding.

Hollywood producers and directors are getting heat for the Rust slaying. And a bill passed right now would make them look even worse. So, they could have put pressure on these lawmakers to kill it.

So, movie sets will continue to be less safe. Talk about hypocrisy.
