Unless you haven’t been paying attention, you know that Donald Trump is leading the GOP primaries. All the polls reveal he is leading by wide margins. Candidates who previously looked to threaten his lead have lost momentum. In fact, Trump only gained support after Democrats indicted him repeatedly.
We can’t predict how next year will go, but things are looking good for Trump. A single debate hasn’t been held. Yet already, Trump is issuing a demand to his GOP rivals. Before a ballot has been cast, he seems to be declaring victory. And he is calling on the other candidates to do this to “defeat Joe Biden.”
Donald Trump released a new video in which he called on his fellow GOP rivals to drop out of the race so that the party could come together and unite around the common goal of defeating Joe Biden.
The former president pointed out that while he has maintained a commanding lead in the race for the Republican nominee, many of his competitors have been slipping in the polls…
“Great polls just out,” Trump began, highlighting those that showed him with 40, 50, or even 60 percent support. “Who expected that? I did,” he quipped…
“DeSanctimonious is crashing,” Trump continued. “Perhaps the party should come together, people should drop out of the race, we unify, and we beat Biden and the Democrats. They should be easy to beat because our country has never been in worse condition than it is right now.”

In classic Trumpian style, the former president boasted in recent polls that show his commanding lead over the GOP pack. The lowest polls have him at 40%, with other Republicans far behind. Trump said he expected that kind of lead when everyone else counted him out.
During the video, Trump called out his rivals, including his top rival Gov. Ron DeSantis. He said that “perhaps” certain candidates should just “drop out of the race.” Trump suggested this would allow the party to unify in order to defeat Biden and the Democrats.
It was a pretty wild swing for the fences, to be honest. Trump is in a strong position now, but we are many months still from the first round of primary voting. There haven’t been any debates yet. And candidates have plenty of time to build momentum and make their case to voters.
But candidates dropping out would make it easier for Trump to secure his nomination. With mounting pressure from Democrat indictments, he’d like nothing more than to have zero competition for the nomination.
It’s unclear why Trump thinks candidates must drop out to “unify” the party. Voters will expect the party to unify regardless, once a candidate has been nominated. In fact, only Trump has refused to support the GOP nominee, if it isn’t him.
Trump is in a strong position. And if he wins, he can expect the party to unify behind him. But to make those demands now, might be premature.
