A few months back, these same voices were loudest in demanding Biden step aside, arguing he wasn’t up for the challenge. Now, they’re saying he was their only shot at beating Trump.
And as the blame game heats up, one surprising name is being tossed into the mix: George Clooney. Yes, Hollywood’s own George Clooney, who had initially joined the chorus of voices calling for Biden to drop out.
Clooney’s op-ed last spring called for “new leadership,” a move that pressured Biden to step aside and, ultimately, cleared the way for Kamala to take the reins. But Clooney has a response for the backlash—he won’t be anyone’s scapegoat.

As the dust settles, Clooney isn’t taking the criticism lying down. According to sources close to the actor, Clooney feels it’s unfair to blame him for Harris’s defeat. Clooney had only wanted Democrats to rethink their strategy, offering what he thought was a voice of reason as the 2024 race heated up.
“When he wrote his op-ed, George did not say, ‘Biden is not fit to be president, choose Kamala,’” one source told the Daily Mail. Clooney wanted the party to consider all options, not to throw their weight behind one specific candidate without due diligence.
