The former agent, Alexander Smirnov, is alleged to have evaded paying income taxes of more than $2 million that he received from multiple sources between 2020 and 2022, according to an indictment unsealed Tuesday in a California federal court. But instead of investigating his claims, federal prosecutors are focused on Smirnov’s financial dealings.
Smirnov is accused of dodging over $2 million in taxes between 2020 and 2022. According to an indictment unsealed in California, he allegedly used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle, complete with a $1.4 million Las Vegas condo, a Bentley, and a closet full of high-end fashion.
When a tax preparer questioned the legitimacy of his income, Smirnov reportedly told them not to ask too many questions. Was that the truth? Or were these paper-pushers part of a suspicious plot?
But Smirnov’s legal troubles don’t stop there. He’s also accused of lying on credit card applications, underreporting his income, and maintaining dubious international connections.
Smirnov’s story raises questions about justice in the Biden era. His allegations against the Biden’s—whether fabricated or not—should have warranted an independent investigation.
Instead, Smirnov found himself in the crosshairs of special counsel David Weiss, the same prosecutor who secured convictions against Hunter Biden earlier this year. That’s like sending a fox to investigate the henhouse.
It’s also worth noting that Smirnov’s lifestyle—Bentleys and luxury condos—makes him an easy target for ridicule. But that doesn’t automatically discredit his allegations.
If anything, it underscores the need for transparency. Instead of smearing whistleblowers, shouldn’t we be asking why someone with such a questionable past had access to sensitive information in the first place?

For Republicans, this trend is deeply troubling. It suggests a justice system weaponized against political opponents. Smirnov’s legal woes might stem from genuine tax evasion, but the context raises serious doubts about impartiality.
If there’s one thing President-elect Donald Trump has made clear, it’s that he intends to restore balance to a justice system many believe has been hijacked by partisan politics.
Trump has also pledged to drain the swamp, a promise that includes rooting out corruption in federal agencies like the FBI. Smirnov’s case serves as a stark reminder of why that mission is more important than ever.
Whether Smirnov is a hero or a grifter, his allegations deserve a full and transparent investigation—something Americans can only hope to see in a Trump administration.
