House Republicans are not letting this go. On Tuesday, Representatives Sam Graves (R-MO) and Scott Perry (R-PA) sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector General, demanding an immediate investigation into FEMA’s alleged misconduct.
The lawmakers pointed to whistleblower testimony and internal reports suggesting a deliberate, widespread effort to deny aid to Trump supporters in Florida and North Carolina.
One of the most egregious allegations involves former FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington. According to reports, Washington instructed relief workers in Lake Placid, Florida, to avoid homes displaying Trump signs.
But it didn’t stop there. Whistleblowers also revealed that in North Carolina, entire neighborhoods were skipped if they showed too much support for the former president. If field teams saw three or more Trump signs, they were reportedly allowed to abandon the area entirely.
“This isn’t just a rogue employee issue,” the lawmakers warned. “It could be part of a broader agency policy.” They fear that countless hurricane victims may still be unaware of the aid they were denied, simply because of their political beliefs.
When FEMA Director Deanne Criswell was grilled about the allegations last month, her testimony left much to be desired. Criswell downplayed the issue, calling the Florida incident “isolated.”
She denied that FEMA has any policies that could lead employees to discriminate based on politics. However, under pressure from Representative Perry, Criswell agreed to request an investigation from DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari.
Later that same day, Criswell doubled down, telling the House Oversight Committee that she had officially requested an independent probe into the matter. But even this promise left many skeptical.
Can an internal investigation truly hold FEMA accountable, or is this just an attempt to save face?
As of now, the Inspector General’s office has refused to comment on the investigation, citing federal guidelines.
Meanwhile, Americans are left wondering if this scandal will receive the attention it deserves—or if it will be buried in bureaucratic red tape.
