Treasury's Anti-Terror Unit Froze Funds Tied to Ilhan Omar's Husband

When most people get in financial trouble, they hear from the IRS. Maybe the FBI if things get really spicy. But when you're married to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), apparently it's the Treasury Department's anti-terrorism office that comes knocking. Because of course it is.

Let that marinate for a second. Not the tax man. Not the fraud division. The Office of Foreign Assets Control — OFAC — the same outfit that freezes assets for terrorists and rogue regimes. That's the agency that allegedly put a hold on investment funds connected to Omar's husband, Tim Mynett. Totally normal stuff.

According to a report from the Washington Free Beacon, Mynett's longtime business partner Will Hailer told investors back in August 2022 that OFAC had placed a "mysterious hold" on funds from Badlands Ventures, a marijuana investment vehicle the two men co-founded. Omar, at the time, sat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. You know, the committee that deals with foreign policy and national security. No red flags there.

Angel investors who had poured $1.6 million into Badlands Ventures eventually sued when their money vanished into thin air. Court filings allege that Mynett and Hailer "moved funds out of company accounts for purposes unrelated to the business" — investors accused them of flat-out misappropriating or stealing the money.

But wait, there's more. The financial trail doesn't stop at a marijuana company. Wire transfers totaling $11.25 million allegedly flowed through Rose Lake Capital, another entity connected to Hailer and Mynett. The funds reportedly traveled through multiple international jurisdictions. Nothing suspicious about millions bouncing around the globe when your wife sits on the Foreign Affairs Committee, right?

Michael Rubin, policy analysis director at the Middle East Forum, didn't mince words about what an OFAC hold means. He said that "if such a hold had occurred, it could indicate that investigators had identified serious concerns regarding the movement of funds." That's analyst-speak for "this is really, really bad."

And this was all happening under the Biden administration, mind you. The same Biden Justice Department later opened a separate investigation into Omar herself to scrutinize her finances, campaign spending, and interactions with a foreign citizen. Even Biden's DOJ thought something smelled rotten in Minneapolis. That probe reportedly stalled for lack of evidence, which in Washington usually means somebody made some phone calls.

We've been tracking the Omar financial saga for years now. The campaign finance irregularities. The questions about her husband's consulting contracts. Rep. James Comer and the House Oversight Committee requesting wide-ranging financial records from companies linked to Mynett. Every time you pull one thread, three more unravel.

The Free Beacon noted it was unable to independently confirm whether OFAC ever placed a hold on any known business entity associated with Mynett and Hailer. The Treasury Department didn't return requests for comment. Shocking — a government agency declining to discuss an anti-terror investigation. Almost like it's real.

Here's the bottom line: regular Americans get audited over a $500 discrepancy on their 1040. Ilhan Omar's husband allegedly has the anti-terrorism division of the United States Treasury freezing his investment funds, $11.25 million in wire transfers bouncing through international accounts, and investors suing over $1.6 million that went missing. And she's still sitting in Congress. Must be nice.
