In an unthinkable twist to this story, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was in the hospital for days before he notified top Pentagon officials—not even the President of the United States.
This is a highly unusual turn of events. At the very least, Pentagon officials and the administrations should have been immediately informed of Austin’s condition. Instead, they were left in the dark over Austin’s health—which could be worse than anyone knows.
The American people will not appreciate not being told about this serious situation. The fact that the Pentagon continues to stay silent might even suggest they still don’t know what is going on with the secretary of defense.
Critics will use this to highlight the apparent dysfunction of the Biden administration. The president has so little authority over his officials, it seems, that they refuse to report major incidents like this to him or the public.
