Bill Maher sat across from ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl on Sunday, looked into the camera, and said something that would've gotten him canceled from his own audience five years ago. When asked if he'd consider voting for JD Vance in 2028, Maher answered honestly, "Yes. If this is the Democratic side, yes."
The comedian who spent two decades as the Democratic Party's favorite smart-aleck just put his vote on the open market.
Maher's ABC interview wasn't a casual gripe session. It was a full-throated indictment of what he sees happening inside the party he's supported for his entire adult life. "Democrats are cowardly, they're cowardly," he told Karl. "Their party is being taken over now, by... every day I hear about a new, very radical" — he didn't finish the sentence, but he didn't need to. The DSA candidates knocking off mainstream Democrats in primaries across New York, Colorado, and Pennsylvania have been finishing it for him.
The moment that's getting the most replay is the one where Maher dropped the pretense entirely. "Yes, my vote is in play. I'm not living in Communist America," he said. And when Karl tried the standard media move — suggesting that calling it communism was an exaggeration — Maher cut him off. "I know the talking point is that it's not communism and socialism. Okay. I've read the quotes from the DSA platform, from their own mouths. Don't tell me I'm not seeing what I am seeing!"
He wasn't done. "Take over of key industries, government. That's communism," Maher said. He pointed to the party's tolerance of pro-Hamas rhetoric on campuses and in Congress. "When we're cheering for the intifada, I'm out."
The easy response from the left is that Maher has always been a contrarian looking for attention. That framing requires ignoring the people standing behind him. Mark Penn, the former Clinton adviser and White House pollster — a man who helped Bill Clinton win two presidential elections — has publicly called for an investigation into whether the DSA is being funded by foreign governments. "Lawmakers, law-enforcement agencies and journalists should investigate the DSA to see if it is being funded by foreign governments and interests," Penn said.
Jamie Metzl, who served on the National Security Council and at the State Department under Madeleine Albright, went further. "Every Democrat and every American should recognize that the DSA represents a fundamental threat to our party and our country," Metzl said. These aren't Fox News contributors. These are Clinton administration veterans.
What makes Maher's interview remarkable isn't that a liberal criticized his own party. That happens on podcasts every week. It's that he named the specific mechanism — the DSA primary strategy of replacing moderate Democrats with radicals in safe blue districts — and connected it to a personal political consequence. He didn't say "someone should do something." He said he'd vote for the other side.
The 2028 primary is already shaping up as a fight between the party's institutional wing and a DSA-aligned faction that openly advocates government seizure of private industry. Maher just told every moderate Democrat watching ABC News on a Sunday that the faction is winning, and that people like him are prepared to walk.
The Democratic Party has spent the last six years telling voters that anyone who notices a leftward lurch is imagining things. Now their own most famous comedian is reading the DSA platform on national television and calling it what it is.
As Blaze News reported, the party's response so far has been to pretend the interview didn't happen. Which is roughly the same strategy they've used for the DSA takeover itself.
