This week, eight House Republicans turned on the party to remove Kevin McCarthy from the speakership. These Republicans could only kick out McCarthy because they sided with Democrats. They plunged the House, and the entire country, into chaos. This will only serve to help Democrats, who will once again accuse Republicans of being “enemies to democracy.”
These Republicans had attacked McCarthy from the very start of his speakership. They opposed many of these deals and pieces of legislation, which advanced conservative plans. House Speaker from the 90s, Newt Gingrich, has been watching this entire drama unfold. He is not at all pleased with these Republicans–and brutally rebuked them.
“I think it’s a very sad day because I think Kevin McCarthy is one of the most talented leaders I’ve ever worked with,” he said. “I think that he accomplished an amazing amount for having a small majority and being — having to take on both the Senate and the White House. And I think this is really a tragic outcome….”
From my position as a longtime Republican activist, they’re traitors. All eight of them should, in fact be primaried. They should all be driven out of public life. What they did was to go to the other team to cause total chaos. We ought to be focusing on Biden. We ought to be focusing on the economy. We ought to be focusing on the border. Instead, you’re going to get a week or 10 days of the media focusing on Republican disarray. It’s an astonishingly destructive behavior by a handful of egocentric people who think they’re superior to 96% of the conference.” [Source: Breitbart]
Gingrich hammered the eight Republicans who removed McCarthy from the speakership. He called them “traitors” and urged the party to primary against them. He said they should be “driven out of public life,” meaning they should never hold public office again.
Newt did not mince words in his withering rebuke of these lawmakers. He said were “astonishingly destructive” and “egocentric.” He’s not far off the mark. The “Republicans” who opposed McCarthy, including figures like Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene, are loudmouths that do little to help Americans.
They are only concerned with their images and careers. They have often fought against their own party, undermined reforms that would have helped Americans, and routinely lied about the issues. Yet they think they can claim to be “patriots” because they give lip service to former President Donald Trump.
But even Trump rebuked these Republicans for fighting their own party. He asked why this was going on when Democrats were running the country into the ground. Gingrich pointed out that Biden is still in the White House, selling out America to China, Ukraine, and the highest bidder.
Yet these eight Republicans would rather give Democrats a huge win, to pet their egos.
