This week, Donald Trump appeared at a town hall event with Fox News’s Sean Hannity. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, related to his 2024 presidential aspirations.
During the evening, Trump refuted plenty of the narratives his rivals have thrown at him.
One common claim by Democrats is that, if Trump returns to office, he will become a “dictator.” When asked if that is true, Trump gave a reply many of his supporters might not be expecting.
Trump dismissed the claim overall but, in a tongue-in-cheek manner, suggested that on his first day, he would be a dictator…
TRUMP: Except for day one.
HANNITY: Except, what?
TRUMP: He’s going crazy. Except for day one.
HANNITY: Meaning?
TRUMP: I want to close the border and I want to drill, drill, drill.
HANNITY: That’s not — that’s not retribution. I got it. [Source: Breitbart]
Hannity: Now, just to be clear, you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody, right?
Trump: Except for day 1. After that, I'm not a dictator pic.twitter.com/jOFrA0MCDx

When Hannity asked if Trump would be a dictator as president, he said only on “day one.” He went on to explain that, on the first day of his presidency, Trump will “close the border.” He said he wanted to “drill, drill, drill.”
It appears that Trump is promising to end the ongoing border crisis by closing the border. This could mean that he will sign an executive order that will temporarily shut the U.S. border with Mexico, preventing migrants from illegally entering the country.
Trump could also sign an executive order to restore drilling in the United States. Early in his administration, Joe Biden signed an order banning oil drilling on federal land. That move greatly limited the U.S.’s supply of oil and natural gas, leading to a spike in energy prices.
Critics of the former president will no doubt have a field day over his statement. But in usual Trump fashion, he is using their own words against them. As president, Trump would have the lawful power to sign such executive orders. He will not have to act like a “dictator” to address the border crisis or reverse Biden’s policy on drilling.
His supporters will appreciate his humor and promise. But this is only more reason Democrats will have a meltdown, should the man return to the White House.
